Billabong Pro Tahiti results from Round 1

Kalani Chapman may have had the highest score of the trials, but as a massive fin gash on his leg attests, he had to pay some dues to get it.
This is my first time here in Tahiti, and from what I've seen thus far, Teahupoo has a knack for human flesh. Sitting a few hundred yards from the break, you can hear it detonating on the reef. The noise the wave makes when lip meets trough is absolutely terrifying. The boys I'm staying with for the duration of the Billabong Pro Tahiti—a very talented lot of Hawaiians who make a living rushing Pipeline—all bear open cuts, bruises, and torn flesh from their personal bouts with the reef, and truth be told, it doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest.
Walking around the small, sleepy, end-of-the-road village of Teahupoo, you're greeted by a number of surfers limping along the path, their Duct-taped feet telling the story of their mishap perfectly. Kalani Chapman, a man known for his serene poise in the most scrotum-shriveling of conditions, holds with him a four-inch laceration on his right thigh that just won't seem to heal. The cut is coming up on being a week old, and although it doesn't appear infected right now, it still looks a ways away from being healed.
"I got gouged by my fin a few weeks ago, it was actually the day before the trials started," says Kalani. "I went down and the fin just nailed my leg super hard and straight-up knocked out my Future fin and took a chunk out of my thigh. It ripped up my trunks and everything. I still kept the trunks...they're like my battle trunks
Stephen Koehne, who met the reef shoulder-first a few days back, looks like his arm has been swiped by a mountain lion with a row of bruised, slightly scabbed claw marks making its way across his limb and towards his torso. "I think if I would have hit it any harder, it would have knocked it out of the socket," he says with a laugh.
Others, local surfers who spend the year challenging Teahupoo away from the cameras, have the backs of antebellum slaves. Their skin looks as if it has been whipped by the reef more times than they care to recall. If you ask them, it's a small price to pay for dancing with one of the world's most fearsome waves.
"To get the fruit, you've got to go out on a limb," says Koehne laconically. A true statement if there ever was one.
Editor's Note:
Round 1 of the Billabong Pro has been completed, and as of an announcement from the ASP, the contest is currently on hold until more swell arrives...which could be tomorrow.
